Research

The Foundation seeks to change the way medicine is practiced so that patients are routinely informed about decisions that affect their care and their lives. To do this, we support research that will:

Improve decision support materials
Facilitate the use of decision support materials in clinical practice
Promote systematic reform in the environment in which medicine is practiced

To better understand the processes that support informed medical decisions, we fund studies on topics such as:

Practical applications of decision support in health care delivery
Literacy and media analysis of decision support materials
Legal and economic implications of informed medical decision-making
National surveys to assess the state of medical decision-making

Assessing Impact

Through these research efforts, we are beginning to assess the impact of decision support from several different perspectives. This continuing learning process guides the direction of the Foundation’s efforts and encourages others who are working to improve decision quality.

Applying the Evidence

Data from the Foundation Research Projects and other well-designed trials, creates the Evidence Base for informed medical decisions. The collective evidence demonstrates the benefits of shared decision-making and shows clinicians and administrators how to provide effective decision support. For more information about some of the studies that create the evidence base for informed medical decisions, see our Research Summaries. If you’re an investigator interested in joining our research, see Information for Investigators
