Stamford Hospital

At the Women's Breast Center at Stamford Hospital in Stamford, Connecticut, patients scheduled for breast biopsies meet with Patient Nurse Navigator Michele Speer for teaching prior to the procedure.

Afterward, Michele contacts patients with the biopsy results and schedules the initial appointments with surgeons and oncologists. Prior to the initial consultation with the surgeon, Michele meets with patients in person to review the pathology report, provide general education about breast cancer, and distribute a handbook on cancer treatment and one of the shared decision-making DVDs on breast cancer.

Patients watch the DVD at home after their consultation with the surgeon. Michele provides follow up after the visit and serves as a resource for patients throughout the treatment process.
