This year has been an extremely busy one for our team at the Informed Medical Decisions Foundation. As we mentioned in February when we launched our brand refresh, our look may have changed but our commitment to amplifying the patient’s voice in medical decisions has not. And I believe that is evident in what we’ve accomplished this year. So I’d like to take a moment to highlight just a few of our accomplishments in 2012 and what we have to look forward to in 2013.
As always, we are extremely proud of the work our the work our research grantees produce. At the Society for Medical Decision Making Conference in October, an impressive selection of this science was showcased. We are privileged to support such high-quality work that increasingly shows how shared decision making (SDM) facilitated by patient decision aids can be optimally configured to ensure care is truly patient-centered.
We owe a great deal to our demonstration sites for expanding our knowledge of SDM implementation. These primary and specialty care sites have been implementing SDM with the use of decision aids and collecting data for over three years now. We’ve also seen great success in implementation by Group Health with interesting results published on the return on investment. In the upcoming year we will further our knowledge of implementation in a variety of settings as our work with the High Value Healthcare Collaborative (HVHC) continues.
Speaking of next year, it will be both an exciting and challenging one for us. We’ve seen a lot of positive momentum by government organizations and others to find ways to integrate SDM into clinical practice both in the U.S. and abroad. Although encouraging, there is still a lot to be done to ensure SDM can be implemented in a sustainable way. We will continue our work on this front in the new year with a number of partners around the world, to ensure patients and providers have the tools they need to make SDM a reality. We look forward to announcing a number of these partnerships in the upcoming months, so please stay tuned.
In closing, we would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday season. We thank each and every one of you for your continued interest in our work and we look forward to your continued support in 2013.
