It’s hard to believe that Pat the Patient has reached his terrible twos! In the process, Pat’s video has become the Informed Medical Decisions Foundation’s most popular YouTube video of all time, with over 12,000 views and counting. Pat continues to pop up on websites (like the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs) and blogs as others use him to help explain the concept of shared decision making (SDM). And just like proud parents, this couldn’t make us happier!
If you aren’t familiar with Pat, he is the main character in our animated short entitled “What is Medical Shared Decision Making?” Pat breaks down the concept of SDM by comparing decisions we make about medical care to other important decisions we make in our lives. The core message of the video is that medical decision making shouldn’t be treated any differently than these other major life decisions. We still need to do our research, ask questions and make a personal decision based on our values and preferences.
A lot has changed in the world of SDM since Pat came on the scene two years ago, but we think in many ways his message is timeless. We hope he continues to help spread the word about the importance of SDM for years to come.
Happy Birthday Pat!
