Shared Decision Making (SDM) Month is back! Over the next four weeks, our wonderful contributors will delve into the art of shared decision making by highlighting our collective progress to improve the quality of care. First we will take a look at how shared decision making has evolved over the decades and where we are headed. Next we will explore the role of the patient in health care decisions and how we can create a more compassionate health care system. Finally we will examine shared decision making in action, highlighting those instrumental in bringing shared decision making from theory to practice.
The theme of the first week (March 3-7) is Shared Decision Making: From 1982 and Beyond. Now you may ask, why start with 1982. The answer will be revealed this afternoon with our first digital freebie of the month, our Shared Decision Making through the Decades infographic. Shared decision making has greatly evolved since 1982 and throughout the week our contributors will highlight some of the milestones we’ve reached, as well as provide a roadmap for where we still need to go to ensure shared decision making is part of routine clinical care.
